In the years gone by, Australian trainers invariably ventured across the Tasman to buy their Cups horse from the famous nurseries in New Zealand which have produced countless Cup winners over the years from Kiwi to Might and Power.

In recent years, the trend has changed. Trainers are now looking to Europe for staying horses capable of competing with the Japanese, French and European raiders. JWR joined the growing demand for European stayers with the purchase German stayer Allano earlier in the year who looks well above average.

It was somewhat ironic that it took a cheap old fashioned kiwi bred stayer in the form of PRINCE OF PENZANCE to repel the international challenge in yesterday's Melbourne Cup.

Bred by Rich Hill Stud in Matamata New Zealand, Prince of Penzance becomes the the 13th individual Group One winner for NZ stallion PENTIRE. Prince of Penzance was sold through Rich Hill's 2011 Premier Sale draft and was initially passed in before being purchased after the sale by Darren Weir's bloodstock agent John Foote.

"Prince Of Penzance was a later foal and he was a little bit behind the others, but he was a good walker and that's what attracted John Foote to him" said Rich Hill owner John Thompson.

The similarities between PRINCE OF PENZANCE and JWR very's own PENTIRE x BLINDING 2yo are uncanny. Not only are both boys by Pentire, but they were both born and raised at the famous Rich Hill Stud. Both boys were immature November foals and somewhat backward when they arrived at the Karaka Premier Sale in the January of their yearling year. Both failed to meet their reserves and were initially overlooked in the sale ring.

In the case of Prince of Penzance, he was purchased by John Foote for $50k after the Karaka Sale and the rest is history. In the case of our Pentire x Blinding gelding, he was purchased for $75k after the Karaka Sale and he will be looking to make his own history in the years to come.
