THE LONG ROAD TO THE GOLD COAST
May 20, 2015
It's mid May and winter has well and truly settled in on the Mornington Peninsula. It's a far cry from the surf and sun of the Gold Coast in January when Australia's most precocious 2yo's line up in the $2.5 millions Magic Millions 2yo Classic.
For our SNITZEL and TESTA ROSSA fillies, their Magic Millions journey has already begun. Rome is not built in a day and these young horses requires months of work to have them ready to go in January.
They were broken in during March. Spelled during April on the Autumn grass and have now come back into the stable for a follow-up preparation during May and June. Trot and canter work each morning is broken up with visits to the barriers, swimming and treadmill.
They will have their first gallop under saddle in June. This will start off at 3/4 pace and by mid-June they will be going evens (or 15 seconds to the furlong). They will be iced following each gallop to keep their shins cool. This type of work is crucial in developing and strengthening their young bones and especialy their shin bones. Shin soreness is the curse of many talented 2yo's. The Magic Millions is rarely if even won by a 2yo feeling their shins!
They will return to the paddock for the back of half of winter and return for a spring preparation where training will go up a notch. Their spring preparation will culminate in a couple of barrier trials and hopefully a race towards the end of the spring. This is when the cream rises to the top and the Magic Millions contenders will emerge from the pack.
Ideally our fillies will have a run in November and again in December before making the trip to the Gold Coast. The MM is run over 1200m and it takes a strong fit horse to win especially in the hot conditions. In this year's Magic Millions race, the winner (Le Chef) made his debut in late November and had two runs leading into the big race. The second placed horse (Pepparano) also had two starts leading into the race. It seems a tried and true formula.
There is a lot of water to go under the bridge between now and January but the preparations are well under way! It will be a huge feat just to make the field. It would be a dream come true to win the race! But, we have two lovely fillies which have the right pedigrees and conformation to go all the way to the Gold Coast!
