COULD THIS BE THE NEXT HORLICKS?
Feb 11, 2016
I rarely buy yearlings by first season sires but I fell in love with this grey filly at the recent Inglis Classic Sale. She is by champion European sprinter/miler EXCELEBRATION and hails from one of the great families in New Zealand with her grand-dam being 5 times Group 1 winner HORLICKS.
For those wondering where this filly gets her grey colour from, you need to look no further than the great HORLICKS who was steel grey. In the late 1980's, Horlicks was the champion mare from NZ. She beat the best in Australia when taking out the 1989 Makinnon Stakes (beating Vo Rogue and Super Impose) before beating best in the world when taking out the 1989 Japan Cup. Champion racemares rarely make great broodmares. Not Horlicks. Two of her foals were Group 1 performers heeded by BREW who won the 2000 Melbourne Cup. Her legacy continues through her daughters which have produced AJC Derby winner FUIMICINO, SOLO FLYER TREMAC etc

This filly is by Exceed and Excel stallion Excelebration who shuttles to Coolmore Australia from Ireland. Excelebration won three Group 1 races and would have won another three Group 1 races had he not knocked into arguably the best racehorse in history, the mighty FRANKEL. He finished runner up to FRANKEL on three occasions but still retired with a Timeform rating of 133 making him the highest rated son of Danehill to retire to stud.
I am always a little skeptical of the European shuttle sires but Excelebration is a fast son of Exceed and Excel which is a bloodline proven under Australian conditions. This filly looks a miler type and it's a great opportunity to buy into one of the best families in the stud book. She is a strong/well built filly so I don't think we'll be waiting too long for her to race. Excelebration raced as a 2yo but got better at 3 and I would expect the same with this filly who will hopefully measure up to races like the Thousand Guineas.
